Overview Of The Gambia Foreign Policy

The conduct of foreign policy in the 21st century has become increasingly important in forging international cooperation and partnerships and in furtherance of international peace and security. The Government of The Gambia being an active member of the comity of nations, pursues a proactive, sensible and practical foreign policy based on international law, conventions and the respect of the territorial integrity of nations. Since attainment of independence from the British in 1965, The Gambia recognizes that the soft power of diplomacy will serve its national interest better in terms of building peace, stability, attracting investment for inclusive national development and prosperity.

Consequently, The Gambia became endeared to many countries and multilateral organisations around the world. The Gambia is a member of many international organisations including the United Nations, the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Commonwealth of Nations, G77 and the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) all geared towards ensuring peace, security and sustainable development for humanity. It should be noted that The Gambia’s foreign policy dynamics mirrors its unique and difficult transitions from brutal dictatorship to democracy, with determination to ensure that never again should any nations or people be subjected to tyranny.

As a result, the overall goal of The Gambia’s foreign policy is to enhance peace and security as well as enhance international prestige of The Gambia, ensure the country’s appropriate and dignified position in the system of international relations, and promote the interest of the country in an increasing globalized world.
